Midweek Faith Lift
Order-Organization-Get It Together!
Rev. Deb Hill-Davis

Good Morning! We are in a whole new month, a whole new spiritual light, the Light of the Power of Order. We have explored and integrated the Power of Wisdom in our solar plexus, the power of Strength in our lower back and spiritual spine by Breathing In and Breathing Out. Let’s do that again! One hand on the solar plexus, one hand on the lower back, we are breathing in and breathing out. We can let our Yes be a true Yes and our NO be a true No and a complete sentence! We are grounded in these Powers, such that with Strength and Wisdom, we can truly embrace the depth and breadth of the Power of Order, because Order is a tricky one!
For openers, the Power of Order is on the front side of the body, just below the belly button. Yes, Order is in your guts…and sometimes disorder is there as well and it is all part of the same Power. Which brings into focus the Truth that Order is a process. It is not a static state. Let me repeat that! It is not a static state! All you have to do is clean the kitchen counter, the junk drawer, the garage or the basement and then just see how long it takes for those places to fill up again. Even when I lived alone, in my own space at Unity Village, and there was no one to blame but myself, all kinds of “stuff” just showed up in my space, demonstrating continuously that Order is a process, not a static state. If there was disorder in my space, hmmmm, I had something to do with it.
And I would like to tell you that there is a pattern of perfect order in the Universe, and that everything is unfolding in the right and Perfect order and it is…BUT the process is messy, often painful, difficult and many times confusing and distressing. Frequently there is a process of “dis-order” before a new order can be established in our consciousness and in our lives. We just need to stay with the process. Sometimes, we need very simple reminders of how order works. This is one of my favorites:
It makes us laugh, but sometimes, I do forget the order in even very simple things and then ….well SOMETIMES I can slip my pants on over my shoes and get away with it, but there are those times when I find my tail in a knot because I tried to do it out of order. There is always enough time to do it over; never enough time to do it in the right order in the first place, right? I know you have never been in that spot….but for all the rest of us, the prayer is that at some point learning happens and we make the shift in consciousness that has the Wisdom, Understanding and Strength to truly embrace the Spiritual power of Order and live into the unfolding of Order in our lives and in our world.
There are two things that are very interesting to me with respect to Order. The first one is that the word for “evil” in Aramaic means immature or unripe; unready. I truly get that when I try to force something, or force myself or someone else to do something before I am ready or before they are ready it feels “evil.” It is then that I can create suffering and pain and resistance. I can even create suffering in my gut when I try to force things. It is like eating foods that are unripe, not cooked, not ready. It is out of immaturity that I reach for what is not good for my body rather than developing the capacity to tolerate hunger while the food becomes truly ready. This Order business truly is anchored in our bodies, for sure and reflected in our bodies as we learn to accommodate a new order.
That brings me to what Rev. Linda says about the koru, a Maori word, meaning loop or spiral. The Maori are an indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand who are an ancient culture with deep roots in nature. This symbol is used in Maori art to represent new life. It is reflected in the unfurling of a fern frond in a spiral pattern. This spiral pattern is reflected throughout nature and can be seen in the conical nature of the nautilus and other shells as well as many other places in the natural world. The spiral that we see here and that you are holding reflects a profound Truth in the unfolding of the Spiritual Light of Order. How is that so?
Let’s look at what Jesus had to say about this Process of Order in the Gospel of Mark.
23 Let anyone with ears to hear listen!” 24 And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. 25 For to those who have, more will be given; and from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.”
And then, there is this:
The Parable of the Growing Seed
26 He also said, “The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, 27 and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. 28 The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.”
These passages are all about how we engage in the process of Order, how we Organize our thinking and our perceptions and our Understanding of what we are experiencing. The spiral reflects our unfolding, expanding consciousness. Jesus offers an invitation to all, recognizing that some will hear it and some will not. As Human/Divine Beings we are in the growth of consciousness Process that is called the Spiritual Power of Order. And Jesus recognized that we are all on different levels or places in this process. THERE IS NO WRONG PLACE TO BE; THERE IS ONLY THE PROCESS OF OPENING TO MORE OR NOT. The evolution of consciousness is as natural a process as the seed growing into a plant with a full head of grain ready for harvest. Timing is of the essence here!
When we talk about “the Kingdom” of God, we are talking about our Christ Consciousness, our Divine Nature and how it develops. The very first line of this passage tells us how this works…. “the measure you give will be the measure you get.” If we are going to step into this process of Order, what does it really take? What Divine Idea do we want to cultivate in the fertile soil of our Divine Nature? What do we “hear” in us that wants to bear fruit, to be born?
How great is our capacity to give and then to receive. How do we open to the Process of Order that takes us to the next level of the shell and it may take us through a bit of chaos or disorder in the process, so that a NEW order can emerge.
The message is that we can choose to put only so much in, and then we just keep cycling around the circle of life with NO expansion. And that is not bad, it just means that you are in a static place. And remember, Divine Order is a dynamic process that inspires Growth, growth that can feel uncomfortable and messy, one that we often choose to avoid. I used to describe it like the teacher who had “one year’s experience 30 times!” This is the teacher that kept complaining about the kids she had as the problem…and believe me, there was nothing added to these folks, and any joy they had in teaching was for sure taken away for them and for their students. Jesus was for sure right about that! They weren’t bad people, they were just really stuck on one level of the spiral with no lifting and no expansion of consciousness….and typically a lot of fear.
The capacity to cope with, embrace, lean into, learn from and grow through the process of unfolding order is what we are inviting when we truly embrace the Spiritual Power of Order. We can get stuck in a survival mode and that is where our country is as a culture right now; stuck in survival mode.
Instead of responding to how things are changing, we are “reacting” to differences, changes that we have no control over by collectively taking things personally. That is a sign of being in survival mode; taking things personally! And when you get to that place, you no longer have ears to hear. You close your boundaries and don’t let anything in that you can’t integrate. And then you fight to protect the boundaries….we are stuck in that kind of cultural pattern right now, because we are afraid. No matter what side of the aisle you are on, we are all experiencing this fear.
How do you lean into the fear? Well, the only way through it is through it as far as I can tell. That is what Jesus said in the passage we just heard. The seeds of consciousness growth are scattered in our fertile minds, and they grow and we don’t know how. The challenge is to allow the seeds of growth to be there, despite the discomfort of not knowing for sure just what they will grow into. For me, this process of Order and the expansion of consciousness began in 2012 when I began here as the minister at Unity of Ames.
I thought I was ready, but oh baby, did I have some consciousness expansion to do! I was not prepared for the experience of sheer terror and the humbling realization that you all were actually listening to what I said. I really was not used to that and at first it was overwhelming and triggered all the “issues” I thought were resolved! HA! Silly me! I had several months of what I will call “intestinal discomfort” as a new, expanded Order was being established in my life and in my consciousness. It would have been easy to quit, to abandon the expansion and just stay in my circular comfort zone. But I had ears to hear that still small voice that said “This is your calling; stay with it! You are not alone!”
This is YOUR Divine Order, Deb….let it re-order your consciousness as you grow into this new path of “minister”….
Blessings on the Path,
