“In A Pinch….Now What Do I Do?”

Rev. Deb Hill-Davis

This is our 4th week of Spiritual Economics by Eric Butterworth and the chapters for this week are about reversing financial adversity and finding security in a changing world….in a pinch….now what?  Butterworth’s basic premise is that economics is basically a psychological phenomenon and the science of economics studies trends and predicts outcomes, but the causal factors are spiritual.  It is a mystical process dealing with the trends of the thoughts of “we the people” and we the people decree what we expect it to be.  So it is about time to speak words of Truth to economics!

He quotes Psalm 1: 1-3

Blessed is the man                                                                                                                                                                                           who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,                                                                                                                                             nor stands in the way of sinners,                                                                                                                                                                  nor sits in the seat of scoffers;                                                                                                                                                                                                        but his delight is in the law of the Lord,                                                                                                                                                    and on his law he meditates day and night.                                                                                                                                                  He is like a treeplanted by streams of water,                                                                                                                                               that yields its fruit in its season,                                                                                                                                                                     and its leaf does not wither.                                                                                                                                                                          In all that he does, he prospers. (NRSV)

So how do we reverse financial adversity?  Our basic premise is that consciousness creates circumstances, or at the very least it sets the climate in which they happen.  Let’s take it in steps…what are they?

Step One is to establish yourself in the awareness that your consciousness creates circumstances and then you move out of being a victim of what “they” do or of what is happening “out there.”  You can change the climate of your thoughts!

Step Two is don’t be afraid to fail; Cultivate Spiritual Poise. In every attempt in life there must be the possibility of success and failure. We cultivate the stability and perspective to deal with both success and failure in what Butterworth calls spiritual poise.  We seek balance so that we do not become too elated by success and too defeated by failure.  Life is fundamentally a matter of growing….one blessed growth experience after another….and missing the mark is the way we learn to hit the target.  Failure is a vital part of achieving success and “earning” the right to be there.  Earning means learning.

Step Three is to REFRAME the circumstances so that you create an opening for the positive activity of Spirit.  If you are unemployed, describe yourself as ready for work.  See your circumstances as a challenge to your faith and determine to grow through the experience.  See yourself as a whole person in a whole universe that needs your gifts and talents.  Hold the thought that “This too shall pass!”  There are about 121 instances in Scripture where it says, “It came to pass” so for goodness sake….let it pass….So often we want to attach to our adversity and tell the story again and again.  LET IT PASS!  Nothing too good or too bad ever lasts too long.  The essence of who you are is shaped by circumstances, but not ultimately DEFINED by circumstances…..so LET IT PASS!  Whatever outer happening shows up, accept it, but accept it as a changing experience that is on its way out and find spiritual poise in the knowing that something better is on its way to you.

Step Four is to RENAME the challenge and start calling it a project instead of a problem.  The concept of project calls forth your creative energy to begin to see a positive outcome even if you don’t know what that might be.  You don’t have to know every right step, just the NEXT right step.  If you have a financial challenge, it can be easy to brood about it and fall into worry.  But remember that mountaintop perspective and hold it in proper viewing distance.  Pray for Divine Ideas and meet it with faith.  If you meet it this way, it can be like a pebble on a stone path to a greater reality for you.  If you put it in your shoe it is bound to cause you continual pain and discomfort and impair your growth.

Step Five is to Put Feet to Your Prayers, our 5th Unity Principle.  Don’t resist your circumstances, bless them.  This creates an opening for them to be a source of goodness in your life, a source of prosperity.  Do something, even if it is wrong.  Prayer and practicing Unity principles won’t prevent you from being impacted by life circumstances which occur in race consciousness…like the Great Recession.  But no one can ruin your life.  You are always responsible for the way you accept and meet the things that happen to you.  The incident is external; the reaction is internal.  You are always an inlet and may become an outlet to all there is in God.  You are always God’s living enterprise in the “express business” and in that consciousness you cannot fail.  Let disappointment become “God’s appointment.”  Remember, your job is not to make it right, your job is to see it right and then you will know what is yours to do.

You may be out of work, out of money but you are never out of Divine Ideas.  Often this can be when the creative process is the most powerful in you….true spiritual expression.  No one has cornered the market on creativity and the flow of Divine Ideas!  There is no guarantee you won’t have setbacks, disappointments, failures…that’s how you learn.  That’s how you know you are in the game!  The oyster gives a great natural lesson in what to do with irritations…turn them into pearls!  So when you get irritated, fed up and hassled, do what Butterworth says….get pearling!

Butterworth quotes Shakespeare’s As You Like It:

Sweet are the uses of adversity,                                                                                                                                                                    Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous,                                                                                                                                                   Wears yet a precious Jewel in its head;                                                                                                                                                      And this is our life, exempt from public haunt,                                                                                                                                        Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,                                                                                                                                 sermons in stones and good in everything.

On the matter of security and the financial questions of purchasing insurance and saving money, the whole spiritual determining factor is the motivation behind doing so.  Our security is ultimately in the Source, which is God.  None of us will get out of this world alive, so what is it we want to save or insure?  We save so that we will have the resources that we need at the ready when that Divine Opportunity presents itself.  Insurance is just part of good stewardship and planning.  Material things do wear out and need to be replaced, so good stewardship of what we have is a spiritual enterprise.  It is not the ticket to security!

The most secure person in the world who has continuous provision for food, clothing, shelter, heat, light, medical care is the life term convict in the penitentiary.  Humans have survived over the ages in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds because of their creative ability—the intuitive flow of ideas in their spiritual dimension, no matter how primitive and simple it was.  So, expand your consciousness outside your comfort zone, outside of any kind of “victimhood” you might like to still embrace and feel the true spiritual security in your Divine identity.  It is in the continual flow of Divine Ideas and the generosity of Spirit providing unlimited possibilities no matter what your age, your physical condition, your bank account.

You might be retired or cut off the payroll, but no one can cut you off from the intuitive flow of your own mind.  And that is the God Substance seeking expression through you!  Secure comes from the Latin, se= without and cure= care: secure is without care  Ideas are the gold coin of the Kingdom of God; ideas out of which we mold and fashion our good.  Money is lost, spent, stolen or wasted, but ideas endure and re-create.  They evolve.  What is your net worthiness?  In Hebrew, the word for security is a word that literally means “worthy”.  Cultivate that consciousness of worthiness and seek first the Kingdom of God and its right use, and all else will be added unto you according to God’s perfect law.

Blessings on the Path…
